Histopathology and Cytopathology are an essential part of the diagnosis, treatment, and care of patients within the European Union
Histopathology and Cytopathology are clinical disciplines and while individual and whole hospital performances and outcomes can be measured the diagnostic performance of individuals depends on many and complex factors. It is essential that all Histopathologists and Cytopathologists work in a supportive and constructive working environment, closely collaborating with other clinical disciplines, preferably working on the same site, free from any interference in their work that could impair the quality of their day to day work or provide an obstacle to maintaining and developing a high quality pathology service for patients.
Practitioners of Histopathology and Cytopathology should be expected to render the best and most effective diagnoses and treatments for patients, including research and development of new services using the most modern and up to date evidence-based medical practice. Where there are obstacles to this, these should be explained in full to all, including to patients and healthcare commissioners so that informed choices can be made about how to manage services for patients.
